In the cosmetics industry it is used as an “anti-aging” substance. It softens and smoothes the skin and strengthens the epidermis. In deeper layers, it stimulates the rate of cell division, activates the cells' metabolism, reduces the depth of wrinkles, and regulates hyperkeratoses. Typically, the esters are processed together with acetic acid and palmitic acid, since these compounds are more stable than pure Vitamin A. Derivatives of retinol are mainly used in the treatment of dry, flaky skin, blemished skin showing signs of acne, aging skin, light-induced skin damage, and wrinkles.

Vit. A is found as retinol in fish liver and egg yolk, and as provitamin (beta-carotene) in carrots, tomatoes, peppers and rose hips. It has a very good effect on typical symptoms of the aging dermis and epidermis by inhibiting the formation and activity of collagenases and matrix metalloproteinases (breakdown of collagen and elastin), stimulating the rebuilding of collagen and reorganizing damaged connective tissue.
