About Cosmetic Analysis

Cosmetic Analysis

Cosmetic Analysis is a consumer portal that evaluates cosmetics and cosmetic ingredients in a way that everyone can understand. Form your own opinion as a member. Find out which cosmetics can trigger allergies and endanger the health of your skin. Cosmetic Analysis is scientifically based, manufacturer-neutral and guaranteed free of advertising.

Cosmetic Analysis is currently available in German, English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.

Seal ingredients tested

With the first interactive transparency and quality seal “Ingredients Tested”, manufacturers and other suppliers of cosmetics are supported in disclosing the quality of their products in detail to their customers. This makes it easier and faster for consumers to find the right products for their skin health. Entirely in line with our consumer platform.

The Foundation for the Promotion of Skin Health

has set itself the task of promoting skin health among the general public. Thus, starting in 2006, it funded the development of the “Cosmetics Analysis” consumer portal, which went online in June 2008.

Neutrality

Our top priorities are neutrality and independence. This consumer protection site is not influenced by advertising or corporate interests. It is financed exclusively by the users themselves by purchasing a membership. In return, members receive well-founded, manufacturer-neutral information based on scientific findings.

Read details about the benefits and functions of the memberships on this page.

Evaluation of substances and products

The ingredient database of Cosmetic Analysis is based on the INCI list of the EU. In addition, it is constantly being expanded by our editorial team to include new substances. The Cosmetic Analysis database currently contains 10,025 evaluated cosmetic ingredients.

Our editorial team researches the ingredients in over 100 specialist publications for further properties. The found places are quoted with indication of the source with the respective ingredients. Currently, 12,184 citations can be found. The resulting properties are added and evaluated separately to the functions described by the EU. Currently Cosmetic Analysis shows 35,533 evaluated substance properties.

The evaluated properties of a substance result in an overall evaluation of the cosmetic substance by complex calculations. It is of course important that good and bad properties do not cancel each other out.

The evaluations are transferred to five different smileys for a better understanding. The smileys are in traffic light colours to make the ratings even clearer. The characteristics and ratings are easily comprehensible by means of the quotations.

So that neutral characteristics and substances such as water do not flow into the evaluation negatively or positively, these are represented neutrally with a yellow Smiley. Yellow smileys for substances and products are therefore neither good nor bad, but neutral, or none of the properties predominate.

Analysis of cosmetic products

A member can analyze any cosmetic product by entering the legally binding INCI information at Cosmetic Analysis. The process is conveniently supported by the system.

Subsequently, all ingredients contained in a product are visible with their ratings, properties and citations. The colored smileys make it easy to identify the respective rating. At a glance it is clear which are the good and which are the bad substances. A rating of the cosmetic product results from all rated ingredients by complex calculations. This rating is also displayed with a coloured smileys.

If desired, the member can publish the product he/she has analysed so that other members can see the rating. Of course including all information about the contained substances. So far, 50,031 product analyses have been published.

The editorial team of Cosmetic Analysis reserves the right to check analyses and - in case of false information - to block them.

Cosmetic Analysis and consumer protection

With the platform Cosmetic Analysis in particular consumers are informed manufacturer-neutrally about the risks and benefits of the cosmetics for the skin health.

In particular, the focus is on the respective ingredients with their individual risks and benefits. By the possibility to check the own products for their compatibility, the consumer can have an increased and direct influence on his health and the beauty of his skin.

Use by experts

Interactive CA codes

Cosmetic suppliers can create CA codes for their products with %{tier='3'} membership. Each CA code contains a link that leads to the product’s analysis at Cosmetic Analysis. There, any visitor can view the product’s rating and all details of the ingredients it contains, even if they are not a member of Cosmetic Analysis.

You can read about the detailed functionality of the interactive CA codes here.

Cosmetic Analysis as a template for other applications

In 2020, the application, which has been running stably since 2008, was revised and can now be used as a modern “mobile first” web application for many other applications.

During the redevelopment, we placed great emphasis on implementing the data structure and all application details with maximum flexibility. Thus, the application can be made usable for other purposes with little effort. Possible areas of application could be: substances and products for food supplements, food, pharmaceuticals, building materials, pet food all other products that consist of components with individual properties.

Thanks to automated translations into many languages and extensive search engine optimization, the system enables rapid international dissemination of new projects.

Cosmetic Analysis serves here, together with the functions of the interactive CA codes as an example application. Manufacturers, associations, advertising companies and others can use this application cost-effectively to promote transparency in their industry.
