Water comes in very different qualities and purity grades. For processing in cosmetics, water should be as free as possible from germs, salts and other accompanying materials. This can be achieved through good distillation equipment.
If tap water is used for the manufacture of cosmetics, this is only recommended for very soft, calcium-free water and prior boiling.
Demineralized water comes with very high germ counts out of equipment. The water must be boiled before using in the processing of cosmetics, in order to kill the majority of germs; sterilization would be better.
Distilled water is directly after its production as good as free from ions and germs. It is more appropriate for the manufacture of cosmetics than demineralized water. If distilled water is stored over a longer period of time, it must again be boiled before use.
Cleaned water according to DAB can be distilled or demineralized tap water, which must be boiled five minutes before use.
Some companies use for their products special sources or healing water, which must be freed from germs before their use in cosmetics.

Water is an important basic material for the manufacturing of cosmetic preparations. It is a good and not damaging solute for many other materials, and poses no problems for normal skin. Because tap water often has more or less dissolved salts (e. g, calcium, iron), this can have negative effects on the shelf life of products, and should be demineralized before use.
