A moisture-containing material derived from algae. Salt of algenic acid. Contains iodine.

Wörterbuch der Kosmetik, page 15

Salts and esters of alginic acid. The alkali salts and magnesium alginate dissolve in water by binding gelatins. Calcium alginate is insoluble in water. Sodium alginate is used as a binding agent and thickener. Protective colloid and base for skin gels, facial masks, toothpaste, and bath products. The viscosity of the gels can be varied by small amounts of calcium ions.

The mucilage alginic acid is extracted from brown algae. It is an acidic polysaccharide of mannuronic and galuronic acid. Sodium, potassium, and ammonium salts of alginic acids in concentrations of 3-6% are most frequently used. Due to the acidic nature and the negative charges in the macromolecule, alginates are sensitive to the addition of electrolytes.
