Studies, literature and statements

Springer Lexikon Kosmetik, page 346

Syrupy, scentless liquid with a sweet taste. Retains moisture, solute, preservative. In some cases can cause allergies.

Körperpflegekunde und Kosmetik, page 143

Polypropylene glycol is used in more than 20% dilution as a preservative. The salt concentration should not however exceed 30%, because it is strongly hygroscopic and takes water from the skin, which can lead to strong irritation. On the other hand, this effect can be positive as a moisture retention material or softener of emulsions and hydrogels.

Pflegekosmetik, page 129

Propylene glycol is well suited as a preservative for water-based preparations (10-15%). Skin irritation is only to be expected at concentrations above 20% (dehydration). The risk of allergic sensitization by propylene glycol is low.
